Back to ServiceM8 & Apple

Why we're Apple exclusive

The way the ServiceM8 app is only available on Apple mobile devices is a big part of ServiceM8's quality and effectiveness as a job management solution for your business. Here's why:

Our mission is to help small business thrive by providing the best job management solution we can. To achieve this, our app needs to be an endless pursuit of perfection, and perfection demands absolute focus.

With field service apps, it isn't enough for an app to just work on a mobile device. This is software for business use. Its operation and effectiveness is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.

So when we started out, it was clear that a great field service app needs to achieve a heightened synergy between the device it’s being used on, the operating system of that device, and the app itself — a level of integration beyond everyday consumer apps. With this in mind, it made sense for us to focus on developing our software for specific hardware.

Which brings us to Apple.

Quality and reliability

Apple has a relatively small but comprehensive range of devices, built to a high standard and installed with operating systems designed for these specific devices. They also operate in a closed system, with unparalleled security, reliability, and after-sales support.

Can the same be said for other mobile device brands and the operating systems they support? We don’t think so.

Being able to depend on the quality and reliability of a field service hardware + software solution is crucial for small business — the business needs to be able to rely on it being accessible anywhere, all the time, without fail.

The thing is, the quality, experience and reliability of a field service app is inseparable to the hardware through which it is used. The app itself is still only one part of the field service solution, and the best app in the world will only achieve marginal results (at best) when paired with sub-par devices and operating systems.

Apple provides the best platform for us to build great software, and the best package of hardware, software and support to meet the needs of a modern field service business.

Combining this platform with ServiceM8 results in a high-quality and reliable job management solution for your business — it makes the reliability and effectiveness of your mobile technology a non-issue, because everything just works.

Our decision to focus on the Apple platform for reasons of quality and reliability, was also a decision to specialise.

ServiceM8 is an app built for business, not for consumers. This is a very important distinction. With consumer apps, being available to a wide audience is often a very important factor. With business apps, the priority is on quality and reliability.

And while the obvious downside of being Apple-exclusive is that it prevents some people from being able to use the ServiceM8 app, the upside of specialising is enormous, for us and our customers — small businesses which use or are willing to invest in Apple hardware.

All of our research, development and testing goes into the Apple platform, meaning we can leverage everything this platform has to offer for our customers, instead of compromising design to be compatible across operating systems.

User experience

Specialising with the Apple platform also allows us to spend time on some of the finer details.

Apple crafts a union of high-quality hardware with a simple, intuitive operating system. They’re driven by an ultimate focus on user experience. ServiceM8 is designed to extend this experience to the way you manage your business.

As an Apple Mobility Partner, ServiceM8 has worked with Apple’s best designers, refining our app to its simplest and most intuitive form.

In the end...

So in the end, if we didn't focus our efforts and instead opted to make ServiceM8 compatible with other hardware platforms and operating systems, it would compromise the quality, experience and effectiveness of ServiceM8 as a job management solution, and therefore its ability to help small business thrive.
